OpenAI Prism
Back in October, I wrote about Writing (a paper) with OpenAI Codex - which worked, but exhibited a few stumbling blocks. Now, OpenAI have released Prism: a writing tool which they pitch at scientists:
Prism, a free workspace for scientists to write and collaborate on research, powered by GPT-5.2.
ChatGPT helps you write and refine LaTeX-and supports your research with explanations, proofs, citations, and summaries.
Ask it anything, upload images, or switch to voice mode and just talk.
Functionality shown in the demo video, on a LaTeX file:
proofreading
turn photos into (Tikz) diagrams
search literature and manage (BibTeX) references
check/verify content of the paper
The (web) UI prioritizes the LaTeX source code and the preview, with a small area dedicated to interacting with the LLM/RLM:
The fact that this is a web UI means that you will have to upload your work to this platform - and stay online while working on it. (Compiling the LaTeX source for display in the side panel is currently rather slow). The download button on the upper right allows a PDF version of the paper to be downloaded; downloading the individual source files is possible on the left by holding the shift key, selecting the files, and invoking the context menu with a right/secondary click.
In addition to the AI-assistance, Prism allows users to collaborate on such projects:
Invite collaborators by clicking the “Share” menu. As you edit, they will see your updates in real time. You can also leave comments by highlighting text and selecting ”Leave a comment.”
Finally, Prism features an integration with Zotero.
Prism is available for free at prism.openai.com to users on a ChatGPT personal account, with ChatGPT Team users in particular out of luck.
